Win98se. As the title says,I ran a defrag on C:\ (three times actually) and it ran to 100% as usual. But each time there was still a lot of fragmented data showing at the end of the display.I ran a full scandisk which 'found errors but fixed them all' then another defrag but same problem.I can't help thinking something's wrong-it's the first time this has happened. Please restore my faith in my PC! Andy.

If defrag is finished, it is.
The "fragments" you're seeing are probably unmoveable pieces of the FAT. Windows must keep those where they are, and there's nothing you can do about it. Cheers,

YES!!! The reply before mine is so right and next time you defrag try and defrag in Safe Mode. You get a better and faster defrag and don't have to worry if something is running in the background and make sure you disable your screensaver too. Enjoy !!!!

Thanks for that, guys,it was disturbing to see the remaining data but if you say it's normal........just that it's never done that before. The bits remaining are 'unoptimised data' not bits that can't be moved.I do shut down scr's,progs.etc, but if safe mode is quicker--what's this about swapping 98's defrag.exe for millennium's? Any real advantage? Cheers,Andy.
