Defrag locks in at 10%

Friend has defrag issue. Why does a cpu, when running DEFRAG, restarts at 10% over and over again and will not continue at all. Even when left on for 6, 8 or 24 hours each time. I have taken off every TSR and cleared all of the programs out that I can and it does not help. Win 98SE on a 488mhz.

Suggestions on how to do a complete defrag?

I dont know what causes that. i think it might be a problem within windows.
The best way i have found is to go to safe mode and run defrag. It always work for me.

Make sure that the screen saver is off. This usually accounts for a defrag having to start over and over.

Boot into safe mode and run it from there.

Check screensaver, Power settings, Schedules - anything that might kick in and try to read the disk after a period of time.

Anti-virus programs can be a pain also.Run 'msconfig' go to startup and disable temporarily everything,remembering to replace them if required.You should have 'scanregistry' and 'task monitor'.Then right click on the start button,select 'open', open 'programs',open the 'StartUp'folder and delete anything in there. The other option is not to bother with defrag at all as it probably isn't required,especially if you are able to set up virtual memory on another partition.If your system is slowing down it may just be worth shutting down to msdos,typing in 'scanreg/fix/opt' press return and let it run. Hope you sort the problem.Andy.

it is important to let also running "load power profiles"
2 of them . keep systray too.
in case of rebooting you will need that
a good rule of thumb is to always keep checked
load power
scanreg
and systray
plus your AV as a permanent setting
when going to defrag just disable AV functions
if prob then go in safe mode and you will defrag in a breeze
many among us have downloaded the ME defrag system and installed it in win 98 SE

Not the original issue,I know,but exactly what function do the two power profiles perform as I have run my system for a year or more with them disabled and had no problems.I have read elsewhere that they aren't required.Any info. on this would be of great interest. Andy.

its role lies in power management, if one use it got to be checked on.
actually there are two, one that loads w/basic GUI
the othe loads user's set up
depending on system unchecking both might induct your system to show no desktop at reboot

(it happened to me!so I did cranked on my other OS
then shut it off and through boot magic came back to win to re-check the options)
