Defrag locking at 10% 1

I have a 98Se workstaiton that is locking up at 10% while defraging. It will start and run normally but then it hits 10% and the drive light stays lit and the whole pc locks up.
I have done the procedures listed on MS's on-line support for 'defrag locking freezing at 10%' with no luck. I also ran the HD's utilities supplied by Manufacture and it tested fine the drive is a Western Digital.

Any other suggestions would be greatly apreciated i do not want to have to rebuild but that is going to be my final option.

Defrag in Safe Moda and see what happens.

Disconnect from the network, disable all virus software, and any other software that accesses or writes to the hard drive.

kjonnnn I tried that already with the same results. I will try msconfig and turn off all start programs. I thought that safe mode would do that but I am going to try msconfig.

and paulovey no network involved on this one but I did not see if anit virus was running.

Try CTR-ALT-DEL all running programs except Explorer. Then try the defrag. Also works with Scan Disk.

I have this problem constantly, I just simply reboot to safe mode and run defrag from there.
