I'm starting to take on a little project of tinkering with a Definity switch to learn it. I've got several 7444s, 8410s, and 8434Ds I've accumulated over the years. Im going to be given a Definity switch (it is an SCC type) so I decided to play arounf with it. I can punch the 25pair tails down just fine, but I want to know from the veterans if anythign else I'm going to need besides an SAT. Can the 7444 and 8434 be powered alone by the circuit packs or do I need some sort of bulk power to mount on the backboard. I know they have little wall wart plug in types to use with a 400B adapter, but I keep reading about some kind of bulk power supply for closets.

Also, what is the difference between 2 wire and 4 wire digital sets?

Again, I'm just an individual that is going to play with this in my garage and possibly replace my Nortel MICS if I feel comfortable with it enough. I have a great passion for PBX systems and their capabilities, so it is more of a hobby and a great desire to learn.

Also, I have a VT220 terminal here I want to use as the SAT. whata re the comm settings (baud rate, flow, etc) from the TERM port on the Definity switch?

8434d will need some type of power for the display to work.

This can be taken off the AUX tail. The AUX tail can provide x3 48 v power for telephones. This need to be connected to pins 7and 8 of the telephone. You wont need closet power as this is designed to run 20+ telephones.

2 wire telephones is just that, 2 wires on pairs 4&5
4 wire phones are on pairs 1,2,3,6.
These are the number of wires required to just get audio working to the phone. Some phones (8434d) use an extra 2 wires for power. Some AVAYA telephones are designed as both 4 wire and 2 wire so will work with either. The circuit pack must also be either 4 or 2 wire to match the telephone. You cannot use a 2 wire circuit pack on a 4 wire only telephone.

The term setting are most likely 9600 N81, and you could do away with the terminal and use hyperterm on a pc or other terminal emulator program.

I like what you are doing as this is exactly how I started in this game.

Thanks billy for the reply. I guess I'll ditch the VT and use a PC with a terminal emulator then. I'll try those settings.

Does the Definity require a special pinout on the TERM to SAT cable, or is it just a standard 25 pin serial?

It uses a standard modem cable either 9 or 25 pin will work depends on what the PC has. I find an emulation of 4410 works the best. but 513 will work as well.

I finally had some time to play and log into the switch. Using Procomm+ as a 4410 terminal I was able to obtain it is a G3V6i.03.2.239.7

I was able to log in using the inads login. Can I tell what features are available by this login? I know I need the init login to add features, but I would like to know what feature sets are installed already.

So, is this inads login the second best right under the init login?

Login permission order.
1 = Init (Avaya only)
2 = Inads (Avaya only)
3 = craft ( technician level) you can do 99% with this)
4 = cust (customer level)

Procomm+ as you have found is the best
Power is needed for 74x 84xx with a display, and consoles.
I have (literally) a shed full of parts, cards and terminals for these. If you are in the UK and can collect you can have them.

Quick question...

Can someone explain the TTI status in detail?

I did a <list config sta> and expecting to see some Us for unassigned, I see alot of t's.

When looking at the <cha sys feat> screen, I see Enable TTI set to Y. I haven't changed anything on this as there was a Wraning to see Documentation.

The documentation was a little vague on this subject.

TTI = Terminal Translation Initilisation.
This in an early form of PSA (Personal Station Access) and enables you to move station ports around in software using a feture code. Have a look at "display feature (codes)" and you will find a TTI on and off code. and a TTI security code.
With the use of the security code an the TTI on code you can re-assign/move a station from one harware pot to another.
Very handy, but PSA (and CTA) is better and easier. With TTI you need to know what station you ae first, (OK if you have station self display turned on ) PSA dosn't care, i will just steal the port you are on regardless.
Systems with PSA eatue turned on will show a "p" in the list con all or list conf sta print out.
