I am new to SharePoint. We installed SharePoint 2003 on a windows 2003 server. What happened is that when we go to http:\\<my server name>\, which suppose to display the default share point page - however, instead of having the page displayed, I got the following in the browser:

Server Error in '/' Application.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed.

Any ideas why this is happening? Am I missing something?
Thank you very much in advance.

I have the following under default web site of my IIS:
_layouts
_vti_bin
_wpresources
bin
images
wpcatalog
wppresources
_privet
_vti_cnf
_vti_log
_vti_pvt
_vti_script

In IIS what websites do you have listed? Along with Host headers? You listed above the webside folder contents.

When you open the IIS option click on website and it will list the web site something like this

Site name: port: Host Header: IP:
Default Web Site 80 **All unassigned**
Sharepoint 80 companyweb **All unassigned**

Above default web site has no host header and sharepoint has a header of companyweb.

I have Default Web Site and SharePoint Central Administration under "Web Sites" in IIS with no host header.

I just tried to put a test.html page in the C:\Inetpub\ directory and tried to access the page via the URL http:\\<myserver>\test.html and I got "The page cannot be found"

Is there something wrong with my IIS or just sharepoint change the default directory to somewhere else?

Thanks a lot.

Do you have the same problem accessing http:\\<myserver>\test.html on the win 03 server also try http:\\localhost\test.html on the win 03 server

Never the less, right click on the website lising sharepoint central admin and click browse. You should be able to locate a link to view the virtual servers. Check to see if default web has the virtural server installed or if the option is there to extend it.
If it is there to extend comment back before continuing.

The default web did have the virtual server installed and to extend.

Also, I tried both localhost, ip address and server name to access my page and cannot access the page.

More question......
Do you need to have the default web site as regular html or do you want it to be sharepoint?
I assume that you mean that there is a link to extend the vitural server to default web.

I need to have the default web site to be sharepoint.
Yes, there is a link to extend the vitural server to default web.

One more thing, I also tried to create a top-level site by the admin site tool. I got "Top-level site created successfully", but when I click on the link to my top level site, I got the same error.

Extend sharepoint to the default web site.
May sure that you have SQL running. Follow the steps provided in extending sharepoint to the default web site and it should work.
