When I peform an nslookup from my laptop when connected to our office LAN, I get the error 'Default servers are not available' as in the example below.

However, when I do the same nslookup from home connected to my ISP, I get no such error.

Can anyone tell me what my DNS server at work is lacking?

There are occasionally other issues or symptoms which I believe are caused by the same problem.

We have two DNS servers on our LAN. One primary and one secondary. The primary is active directory integrated and is running on the PDC which is running Win2K Server.

The address of the primary is 192.168.0.5 and the secondary is 192.168.0.6

We have a domain with a subdomain which is forwarded to our static public IP address (213.208.116.101). Our domain is office.autotrade-mail.com

The FQDN for our IP address is solent01.gotadsl.co.uk

The error I refer to appears below:

C:\Documents and Settings\peter snow\Desktop>echo on

C:\Documents and Settings\peter snow\Desktop>nslookup -type=mx solentmazda.co.uk
.
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.5: Non-existent domain
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.6: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.5

Non-authoritative answer:
solentmazda.co.uk MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = m0.netfirms.com
solentmazda.co.uk MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = m6.netfirms.com

solentmazda.co.uk nameserver = ns2.netfirms.com
solentmazda.co.uk nameserver = ns1.netfirms.com
ns1.netfirms.com internet address = 209.171.43.30
ns2.netfirms.com internet address = 204.92.123.11

---- end error message ----

I would be very pleased and will give a 'star' to anyone who succeeds in educating me to the source of this problem!

Kindest regards

Check things as follows and notify if it does not still works:

- Active directory: Does it find your server ( if not, reinstall A.D)
- Do you have the right workgroup, group policies...
- DNS is activated
- DHCP is running
- NetBIOS settings on
- There is NetBEUI and TCP/IP protocols running

It just looks like there is no reverse DNS set up for your internal DNS server. Your PC knows that your default DNS server is 192.168.0.5 and despite the fact that it does not know the name of that server, it still answers your query.

Question:
C:\Documents and Settings\peter snow\Desktop>nslookup -type=mx solentmazda.co.uk

Answer:
solentmazda.co.uk MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = m0.netfirms.com
solentmazda.co.uk MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = m6.netfirms.com

Thanks Chris,

I keep creating reverse lookup zones but they keep dissappearing.. each time I create one (I did this morning), I look later and it has gone and the secondary's all show an error.

Any ideas why that should happen?

If it's Windows DNS then I couldn't say. I only do BIND!

ok.. thanks for trying Chris,

I think I have possibly got it working...

I have added a pointer record in the reverse lookup zone on the primary dns server for both of the dns servers. I then performed the query again and it appears to work now.

Also the zone has not dissappeared this time either and I have successfully replicated it to the secondary server.

Now I need to figure out where the cached lookups dissappeared to and how to set that up again? Can any Win2k bods help me with that pls?

And thanks Chris, you pointed me in the right direction.

Kind regards
