I reciently upgraded my print server from 2k server to 2k3. With the 2k server all the printer settings that I set in properties on the server propogated to the clients as default settings. But now with 2003 none of the setting I setup are propogating down on some of my printers. For instance, I used to have some custom paper sizes setup on my plotter (36x120, 36x90, etc...), with 2000 all of my users would see those paper sizes when I would create them on the server. But now no one gets those paper sizes even though they are set on the server.

Anyone have any ideas?

thanks

Have you upgraded to the 2003 drivers for the printer?

Yes, I have installed the GL/2 Windows 2003 drivers. Supposedly they work with 2000/XP/2003 which is what all my workstations are using.

Is this problem solved? We have the same problem here....

No, my guys have to manually change the settings every time they print. It's a pain in the arse!

I dont have any immediate suggestions, put to save yourself a lot of hassle, I would switch back to 2000 until you can come up with a fix.

ROFL, I am assuming that was humor. :)

Like I am going to do a Server/Workstation rollback to 2000. :) That would be like asking your Mechanic to put the old motor back in your car because the washer fluid didn't work right after having your engine upgraded. My users having to set the settings each time is a lot less of a hastle then downgrading my servers.

Have you thought about putting up a workstation with Windows 2000 on it and the print queue for the server. Then attach all of your client systems to the 2000 print queue server.

Crummy thing to have to do, but it might work for you.

Your original post "I reciently upgraded my print server from 2k server to 2k3"

SERVER !! you didnt say server(s). Downgrading back to W2K is not a hassle. I would assume that your printer server is nothing more than a member server on the domain, not a big deal.

How much of a hassle is changing the configuration settings for your users? Users can be real fickle, and inconveniencing users is like inconveniencing GOD if you let them tell it. I didnt know how bad your problem was and how close you were to finding a fix. If your close to solving the problem then I would suggest switching back, but if you're getting no where fast and are unlikely to find an answer anytime soon then you have to do what you have to do.

Sorry for the confusion. I wasn't trying to be condesending, I actually thought you were being humorous. No, the server is a Domain controller, it would be a headache to get it back to 2k. PScottC has a good idea, I think I may try that.

Try this on the w2k3 server:

Start -> Printers and Faxes -> File -> Server Properties
Click the checkbox to create a new form.
Give the form a name and set the paper size and margins.
Click the Save Form button and exit out.

On your client PC, the dropdown for page size should now have the form you just created.

I do use Kix to set the defaults.

"On your client PC, the dropdown for page size should now have the form you just created."

That's the problem I am having. If I make any settings on the server they don't show up on the PC.

-Craig

Well, there must be some other issue because I just double-checked by creating a couple of forms on the 2003 server. They were instantly available on my client PC. My client PC is running Windows XP SP1. I'll investigate further.

-pugman

Yeah, I wish I could figure that other issue out. :)
