Is the default gateway the first route chosen if you have additional static route setup for the same destination.Meaning I have 191.0.3.2 as my default and additionall gateway of 191.0.10.0 set up for dial up if I remove dial up on destination address does it look at the default first which is 191.0.3.2?

Your route(s) will fall into the default if there is no other route specified. So in looking at the route table, I suspect it would look something like this.

#netstat -rn
default 191.0.3.2 UG 2 3354 en0
127 127.0.0.1 U 9 3247 lo0
xxx.xxx 191.0.10.0 U 3 342 en0

Whatever network addresses you have in xxx.xxx will be routed to 191.0.10.0. If xxx.xxx was 191.0.10 and you had all yur dial up connections assigned something on the 191.0.10 network, then all the dial up connections would route to 191.0.10.0. If you took away that route statement, all the dial up connections would fall under the default route statement.

Understood but what if they both remained and the dial up at the remote location was removed would it look at 191.0.3.2 first or 191.0.10.0?

default 191.0.3.2 UG 2 3354 en0
127 127.0.0.1 U 9 3247 lo0
xxx.xxx 191.0.10.0 UG 3 342 en0

only if the destination is xxx.xxx it will be routed through 191.0.10.0 ,for all the other addresses it will be routed through the defaultgateway ( 191.0.3.2). By that static entry in the table what u are tryin to specify is if and only if the packet is for xxx.xxx then route it through 191.0.3.2.
hope i am clear

if both routes remain, then anyone coming from the xxx.xxx address scheme will be the only ones routed to 191.0.10.0, all other addresses will be routed to the default route.
