Is there a difference between using the next hop serial interface IP versus the next hops Fastethernet IP?
Where I work now all the default gateways are set to the next hop serial interface IP. Where I used to work the default gateway was always the next hops Fastethernet IP,
(or the ip of the interface that connected to the remote network)

If there is no differance is there advantages or disadvantages with either?

Thanks

Timc

i think it does not matter because it depends on how your network is connected. So next hop mean for example sending a packet from router A to router D so in between of router A and router D there are router B and C. so the router will make use of routing protocol to depends which is the next best destination.

it doesn't matter.. the default gateway next hop will depend on which interface your upstream provider or ISP comes in on..

if they present a serial connection to your serial interface [frame relay, HDLC, PPP, ATM e.t.c], then the serial interface IP address becomes your default gateway...

if they present an ethernet connection [FDDI/fibre, DVB for satellite e.t.c], then your default gateway will be the IP address of your ethernet interface..

it doesn't always have to be what you've known it to, it should be to which interface your ISP presents..

good luck..
