Hi

Is there any way to specify a default font (other than the standard) in Word for those without Normal.DOT templates?

Need to specify a default font, which will be copied to the new users NORMAL.DOT and can subsequently be amended for personal choice. Is this possible?

Thanks

Penny

Hmm, I would think that can be accomplished by just opening a new document, setting the font to whatever you want as default, then save to the appropriate location as Normal.DOT
I know that basically the same thing works for Excel if you want it to open a particular way different than the installation default.

The default settings can be changed at any time by doing the following:

Open Word
Format > Font
Choose the desired font settings (font, style and size)
Click Default button
Click Yes
Now, any NEW documents will use the specified font settings by default.

It is absolutely impossible, completely impossible, for anyone to be one of "those without Normal.DOT".

Everyone has normal.dot. Word will not run without one. If Word can not find one, it will create a new one.

If you want a different font for documents, you can either:

1. change the normal.dot being used...and again there HAS to be one.

2. use a different template for whatever documents you want different.

Of the two - #2 is, by far, the better choice.

I work with Penny, we want to know if it is possible to specify the settings for the *creation* of NORMAL.DOT for new users. ie when there is no NORMAL.DOT, it creates one using the settings we have prescribed for it.

Our specific problem is that a newly created Normal.dot sets the font as Times New Roman. We want to be able to make this Arial.

We understand that you can save the font to arial to amend your normal.dot individually - but is there any way to control this centrally?

Thanks a lot

Alter the way Word creates normal.dot, if it can not find one? NO. No, you can not. It is part of the executable. It is not configurable. That is why it is default.

Can you do something about it? It depends on how you are set up. When you say centrally, I would assume this means a network. In that case you can push (i.e force) whatever normal.dot you want.

What exactly do you mean by new user? Perhaps unfortunately, Word does default (on a NT/2000/2003 server environment) to placing normal.dot under the username. This allows flexibility, but makes it a pain for administration. As you likely know.

Again, I would strongly recommend that proper template files be used. We push a normal.dot to users, and it loads a company template automatically. However, there is no way to change what Word makes default font on a NEW normal.dot. If a user deletes their local normal.dot, and starts Word, boom, default font.

Thanks, we thought that was the case, back to the drawing board!!

If they are all on a network, howabout network scripting? Do you have anyone there who can setup vbscript over the network?
