Since applying ML 9 to 4.3.3 I have been getting a dead.letter file in /var/spool/lpd/qdir. This the contents of that file:
"Message from queueing system:
=====> MESSAGE FROM PRINT JOB -1 () <=====
0782-024 The piobe command must be invoked only by the spooler's
qdaemon. It is dependent on services provided by the qdaemon and
cannot run without them. To cause the qdaemon to invoke piobe, refer
to the qprt, lp, lpr, and enq commands."

While this file is there the qdaemon doesn't respond correctly to commands. Does anyone have any idea why this happening and how to fix it?

TIA

Marvin

Well the last time I saw this was after security patches in 4.3.1 and in 4.2.1 ...but not after 4.3.3_9. It was U455651 and U475648...for the earlier versions...
Perhaps the same applies....or at least the concept...

See if there are later patches for the printer demons than you have?
The last time it was caused by bos.rte.libqb problems...
are you at bos.rte.libqb.4.3.3.75?
and printers.rte.4.3.3.75
bos.rte.printers.4.3.3.75, 4.3.3.76, 4.3.3.77 4.3.3.78

The other thing is look at piobe and see what the ownership and group are
vienna:/usr/lib/lpd>#ls -la piobe
-r-xr-sr-x 1 bin printq 79702 Aug 23 2000 piobe
vienna:/usr/sbin>#ls -la qdaemon
-r-sr-s--- 1 root printq 70682 Aug 29 2000 qdaemon

I havent seen in particular the 433_9 fix for this yet or the problem......you could always call IBM to report it...but as I say in the past it has been a problem with the printer library....so don't know if this helps or not...........

Let me know if you find anything out? Thanks

I check everything you suggested and it all checks out. IBM suggested patches IY25955 and IY17646. Still doesn't work. Any other ideas?

Thanks for the tips.
