Hi
I have got a Compaq Armada 1750. PII, 366. When i switch it on the red compac logo appears and then the screen goes blank. There is still power going to the laptop as the lights are on. If i hold the F8 button the windows 2000 advanced option menu comes up. If i select any of the options the laptop freezes. I have tried a boot disk nothing happens.

Any help would be grately appreciated. I'm really stuck.

Sounds like from your brief discription that it is o/s related...try using the win2k cd to repair the o/s installation, select "Search for Windows 2000 installations" (if you don't have the repair disk) and let it restore the system. GL

I have tried booting up the pc with the win2000 cd and nothing happens. As soon as the red compaq logo disappears the scrren then goes blank unless i hold down F8

Hi,

If you get no POST indications and Windows is starting to load then it's time to format your HDD after running FDISK.

Chances are that Windows is loading up but getting stuck on a hardware driver or something.

Any Help, Yes/No let me know

Regards

Yeah. I had problems with a laptop and win2k, what was happening was that the resolution was really bad, and the screen was small with a border around it. When I pressed f8 the screen became normal. If anything this supports the problem driver theory,

If you are booting from CD you shouldn't get the f8 option, check your BIOS to see that it is trying to boot from CD, also, you might also need to press a key to boot from CD (course you won't see this....) so you might have to tap your space bar a few times. Failing that, use another PC to produce some boot disks (from the CD) which don't require you to press space b4 loading. Also, does your lappie have an alternate video out socket? if so, your video card might allow you or windows to disable the LCD (mine did), and if so, theres usually a function key on the keyboard.

PS Whatever happens, you should get a screen come up when you enter the BIOS. if you don't you might have to take it to be fixed or look for a new laptop.......

Do you see faint images when you look at the screen from a different angle? This could mean the backlight has problems.

Good Luck!

I can't get into the bios. the only buttons that work are:

* Holding down F8 - that take to to the windows 2000 menu option
* If i press Fn + Esc then a tiny box appears saying Compaq bios 06/04/99
* If i hold down F10 nothing happens

I have tried using a boot disk but i can't get it to boot from floppy. I need to get into the bios to enable this.
