I have a Dell laptop that has had the HDD die in it. It seems that it is not accepting power, is there a way to recover data from this drive? Thanks.

The going rate is aroug 1500 dollars when I priced this out. If it is a power issue then it is more than likely the controller board on the hard drive. If you have another hdd of the same make and model you can switch that board without much problem and try that or have that board repaired. This place has an adapter so that you can slave it into a regular desktop and get your info that way.

I know it sounds crazy, but as a last resort, place it in an antistatic bag and stick it in the freezer for a couple hours. Then throw it back into your PC while it is still frozen (although be careful about condensation which will form on the drive minutes after you pull it from the freezer).

I wouldn't normally tell anyone to try that, except if it's a last resort. I have recovered data from 2 drives that crapped out on me using this suggestion...

I might suggest using a BartPE boot cd Go to a good computer and download it free. Then make a bootable CD with BartPE on it. It actually has a built in Windows XP OS on it so you will actually be booting in to its XP. It will then allow you to search around, using Explorer, on the presumed bad harddrive (assuming it can still read the platters). You should be able to grab your data and move it in a safe location. Let us know if that works.

Right, utilities like that might work if the drive is still being detected by the BIOS. If it's not, then software is not going to help...

Alright, I have Barts PE finally working. I am in the command prompt in the OS and I can get a directory of my C: drive which is the problem drive. However I can not get a directory of any file or folder with a space in the name. For instance:

C:\Dir gives me a full listing

C:\Dir Documents and Settings gives me File Not Found

How is this possible, I can see the file myself during the initial listing of C:\Dir Am I missing something?

Thanks again.

Yes, thank you. I got it about two minutes after post. However now I can see the directory, I am having difficulty getting it to copy to external drive.

syntax

C:\>copy "documents and Settings" D:\TempFolder

I get system cannot find the file specified. I believe it is reading for "documents and Settings"\* as that is the intial read out before the message System cannot find the file specified. Any more ideas,

In an attempt to move the documents I also tried this;

C:\"Documents and Settings">D:\TempFile

Error Message:Access Denied.

Thanks in advance.

Progress, but I am not getting a copy.

What happens is that the machine moves, but after a few seconds I only get the prompt:

C:\Documents and Settings>

C:\Documents and Settings>xcopy FolderName D:\TempFolder /s /e is the syntax I am using. There si no confirmation of files copied and upon researching they are not copied.

yes, I got IT!!!! taking some of your guidance I figured out a way to get my prompt to change to the full path I was attemptign to get to. IN this case A user folder within Documents and Settings, I needed her Documents and Desktop files.

cd C:\"Documents and Settings"\ProfileName\Location(Desktop, My Documents if space is in folder name, it MUST have a " ") this gave me the prompt:

C:\Documents and Settings\ProfileName\Location

Copy C:\"Documents and Settings"\ProfileName\Location D:\TempFolder - This copied my files within the location to the temp folder on the D: drive. Thanks so very much!
