Dead and dying serial ports

Howdy all

Well, we had some serious weather on Friday and when I went to the terminal this morning to add a couple of extensions, I get garbage on the screen. The messages were displaying ok, I could login , and I could do VM. I could enter a load but after a couple of commands, I get the crap back.

I also connected this port to a laptop to verify it wasn't the terminal, and I get the same.

Is this serial connection dead? Is there anyway to reset it? I have other ports that are dead and with this one going, I only have one back-up.

Thanks

Patrick

Log in with a maint set and disable, then enable the port(s). Not feeling confident that this will reallty help you though.

All of your ports having the same problem? I assume you are speaking of the standard three ports that come with the switch, no MSDLs.

Yes, I'm referring to the ports coming off the octopus ...seems like there are 4 though.

OK, I guess I could set up a maint set. Could you give me specifics on dis- and re-enabling the ports

If you don't already have a maint set defined and you are getting garbage on your serial ports, then you may not be able to add the feature. If you think you can, then add MTA to the class of service for a set that is close to your VDT so you can see your actions. It's hard to do this without your eyes. Once your maintenance set is defined, make sure you know your SPRE code. All commands use the letter corresponding to the numbers on the key pad. I.E...the letter E is the number 3 on the keypad. A space is # and enter is ##. I will assume you are trying to get port 0 reset. With the phone on-hook:
1. press the primary DN key and enter SPRE+91 (your VDT should indicate the maint set is logged in)
2. enter the command LD 37. (53#37##)
3. enter STAT TTY (7828#889##) and the VDT should display all the TTY ports.
4. enter DIS TTY 0 (347#889#0##)
5. enter ENL TTY 0 (365#889#0##)

This will have reset the TTY port via the maint set. To log the maint set out press four stars ****.

Hopefully I didn't miss anything here and it helps.

bad news is with that cable dying out i would replace the ssc card. you can build ports on the next cab octopus cable for a back up.. another point make a few additional sets maint sets...

What happened to my last post? I know I submitted it. Or maybe I previewed it.

Thanks for the suggestions, but re-enabling those didn't do anything. I'd believe it to be hardware.

Well, it's all a moot point now; I just got green-lighted for a replacement. It's long overdue as we've extended this lease 3 times already.

Thanks for the help.
