Anyone heard any good reviews of good brands of RAM? I know to go with the lowest CAS latency but with the DDR333 not having a CAS 2.0 out yet, perhaps I am not up to date on this however, is DDR266 a cheaper and just a fast supplement? I have read the multiple articles on Tom's Hardware. I aske this because I have come into a bit of luck and have a chance to buy new memory inplace of the Corsair DDR333 with the CAS of 2.5. I can get a larger amount of DDR266 for the same price of the DDR333 and be just as fast as far as latency?

Here are specs FYI:

AMD AthalonXP 1900+
ThermalRight AX-7 w/ 80CFM Delta
Soltek SL-75DRV5
2x Corsair PC-2700 512mb DDR333
Leadtek GeForce4 ti4600
SB Audigy Platinum w/ Internal Audigy Drive
Linksys 10/100 NIC
SB ModemBlaster v.92 56k Modem
Western Digital Caviar 100gb 7200 RPM HDD
Toshiba 16x40x DVD
Plextor Plextwriter 40x12x40x CD-RW
Antec SX-1040B w/ 400W P/S

ddr333 will be faster, of this there is no doubt. If you can do, use it !!

to be honest mate, i dont think you need more RAM, you already have 1gb !! :)

however, if you are planning to run the next space shuttle mission you cant go wrong with crucial.

With a setup like that, PC2100 RAM would probably slow it down somewhat.

Even with a lower CAS latency, the RAM (obviously) runs at a slower speed. Tom's articles generally state that DDR333 is not the great speed hike they expected it to be, but the benchmark figures they publish show that there is a performance gain nonetheless. What they are saying is that if you are planning to upgrade from DDR266, it's not really worth it. However, with a DDR333 setup like yours, I certainly would not even consider putting in DDR266 RAM!

I agree with tempo21 - do you have a specific reason for needing more RAM? 1Gb is loads for a desktop - it's more than many small business servers!

the kind of difference you're talking about is in the nanoseconds. :)

Yes, but when you multiply those nanoseconds over many billions of operations, you're talking a very large number of seconds.

Technicalities aside, it "feels" slower.

Why put a Mini fuel injection kit into a Ferrari?

My 1.2 Gig Celeron runs plenty of 3D great games with 128 MB of PC100 ram. When your processor is over 1 Gig it is the video card that is most important. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Thanks everyone. I am going to do a little bit more research in the memory product available in the DDR333 area and then go for the gusto!

I would recommend OCZ ram.. There are a few carriers of it online. It comes with copper heat sinks preinstalled and they have it all the way up to 512mb 400mhz DDR... (which I am running in my P4 overclocked from 1.80A to 2.5ghz)..

Ive done a little looking around and kinda come to a conclusion. I can't decide however if I wanna go with the 512mb of OCZ DDR333 or try my luck at the Corsair again. I have heard very good reviews of both and no problems other then what I have had. I'm considering the Corsair again with the hope that my experience was only a fluke and the next time around will be better. However, the OCZ is about US$40 cheaper. Has anyone had any experience with these brands or maybe know a review that examines both? I need to get my system up and running soon! Everquest is calling!

to be fair, i reckon you have a fairly AWESOME spec on your PC. If youve spent all this $$$$ on all the above you shouldnt worry about $40 !! If you want the ultimate why not get an XP2100+ chip ??

I bet you get some good benchmarks!! Id be interested to hear what you use your PC for ?? wot resolution you run and how many FPS ??

I recon its either games or video stuff with that kind of machine. If you are doing DTP you must type really fast!!

Well Tempo, this is my first actually PC that I have built and proud to say that it is a doozy! Really, I haven't spent all that much I had bought a lemon PC a while ago and shipped it USPS and it got all banged up but the $2000 of insurance I put on the package came to good use. That explains where all the funds for this machine came from. Unfortunately at this time all I am doing is playing Everquest, but I do want to get into some DV editing and graphics, etc. To answer the question about going with the XP1900+ instead of the XP2100+ it was a matter of about $100. Also the Soltek MB has the Red Storm overclocking chip and I have already experimented with it and took it to the 2100+ speed. As far as the benchmark test Ill have to get ahold of the software for that and get back to you.
