I have a program using SQL Server(MSDE2000 & MS SQL Server 2000). On Windows XP Pro when the program is running a batch module which hits the server IP repetitively over a period of time, I get the "[DBNETLIB] [connection open ()).] sql server does nor exist or access denied" and after a brief pause not hitting the server, the program can resume processing. It appears that XP security is blocking the server IP and then releasing it again after a brief period of inactivity.

Does anyone know if this is what is happening and if so is there a setting in XP to allow unlimited access to the server IP?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
Not too sure if this will work but can u disable the firewall on that network connection and see if it makes a difference?

Sounds like your program has run into the max. number of SQL connections that can be made at one time. Sounds more like a license issue. I'm not sure how many concurrent connections you can have to MSDE or SQL Server (it may be limited to 5, maybe 10). Once it hits this limit, no more connections are allowed until your progrm gives up one or more.

The program uses only one connection to the server but hits the server repeatedly thru this connection. The problem occurs with only one user running the app. The same application running in a Win98 or Win2000 OS does not have the problem. So I do not think that it is a licensing or max users issue.

I face the same message when i using MDL connection in Windows 98. Sometimes the connection fail to hit the server. Show [DBNETLIB](ConnectionOpen()).SQL SErver does not exist or access denied. Then it show Microsoft Data Link , Login Failed. Catalog information cannot be retrived.
Any remedy for this?

.... it's been a long while since this thread was started but I encountered the same message today when I tried to open/execute a DTS package.

The only workaround was to disable my DSL internet connection. Then I could open or execute the DTS package
This is SQL server 2000 on Windows 2000.
