I have a tape that was last mounted back in 2003, the pool it's in seems to be DBBACKUP but isn't one of the tapes we use for catalog backup, I can only assume in the past it was used in error by someone for a catlog backup.

How do I put it back in the scratch pool so it can be reused?
I've tried force expireing the tape using bpexpdate but I get "requested media id was not found in NB media database and/or MM volume database", the tapes not frozen, if I try and do it via the GUI I get an error 91.

You will need to do the following;

vmquery -m <Barcode/MediaID>

Get the volume pool ID and tape status then do

vmquery -deassignbyid <mediaID> <volumepool#> <status you want to change to>

Example:

vmquery -deassignbyid 000001 4 0x0

hi Calz

it has been my experience that once you use a tape for catalog backups, you cannot reuse it for regular backups UNLESS you use the bplabel command manually.

i am sure that with the bplabel command you will overwrite the catalog header that is placed on the tapes.

Also if you wish to manually remove a tape completely fron netBackup/Media Manager, go to
But you might still have to use the bplabel command to re use the tape

You do not have to use the bplabel command for this.

The Catalog backup is written in a different method than the policy backups and gets protected by NBU so you do not make a mistake and overwrite the daily tape.

You must first deassign the media, then you can either expire it or move it to another pool. This is stated in the Admin Guide.

Thanks I'll try when back to work tomorrow.

Thanks the vmquery -deassignbyid command worked.
