Hello,

that problem is resolved! Peter, from the german dbase newsgroup, had the crucial hint.
The problem was the entry "files" in my config.nt file in %windir%\system32 directory. That entry must have a value more than "10".
On my systems run dbase.exe with Files=20 at this time.
I hope, anyone they get the same error message, can help this hint too.
Greetings from germany and happy 2008 around the world.

Be prepared that even that number may be too low if you need to have many tables open. Besides dBase itself needing a certain number of file handles for itself, each open table needs a file handle, then one for its indexes. Depending on the application's needs, many programmers set their CONFIG.DB files= values to 60 or 80.
