Hi,
How to take backup in DB2 while DB is being accessed by applications? (ie. connections are open).. Pl. give the steps to be followed in control center or if any url which explains this , send that...
The key to DB2 online backups is the Database Configuration Parameter "LOGRETAIN". Set this parameter to ON, take a full off-line backup and you will be set to use Online backups. You have probably noticed on the Options tab for the backup GUI that the online option is not available. After setting the logretain to on this should be available for you to choose.
I would suggest going through the DB2 documentation and read up on logretain. The biggest issue with setting this parameter is that your log files will now stack up meaning that you will have to do something with them.
There are two types of using logfiles: circular logging and archival logging. The last one corresponds with the setting of logretain on. This means that you can do a restore of a backup and then roll forward to a certain point in time.Only archival logging will give you the option of doing a on-line backup. Be aware that archival logging and online backups do mean a lot more maintenance. If you do not need them really stick to offline backups, conveniently scheduled during after office hours. Of course this depends on the nature of data stored and processed..........
There is a lot to be said about online backing up. Drop a line if you want some DBA stuff about it..... T. Blom
