I am supporting a company with an application from a vendor that has gone bust. So I need help with a few things. Basically they have a database application that has paradox db files how can I firstly check what version. Secondary iis there any known bugs with paradox files as their problems started after the millenium.

A possible cause of date problems:
Unless specifically coded, default Paradox behavour doesn't "window" 2 digit years. It assumes current century if only two digits entered. so:
on 12/31/1999: 1/1/ 99 = 1/1/1999 , 1/1/01 = 1/1/1901
on 1/1/2000: 1/1/99 = 1/1/2099, 1/1/01 = 1/1/2001

This applied only to data as entered. Dates already in tables do not change as they are stored as integers. Since you apparently don't have a copy of Paradox, if you import the data into excel or access you could sort by date and look for this problem.

OK
Do you know what a .px file is as there seems to be a .px file for every .db file and some .val files as well. Another thing aswell is that they seem somehow to have the path saved in the file becase when I copied the data from there network to my home pc I had to make sure that the path was the same because it wouldn't open

any idea's

.px file is the primary index .val files contains other information about field restrictions like referential integrity etc. This might be where the path is stored (refering to other tables). You can probably get some detailed technical information on the Corel website.

Also there is a website which has information and more links.

I have programmed in Paradox 4.5 for DOS for several years. I have the disks for this program. I also have the runtime version of the program and older versions. I have in other computers the versions 5 and 7. I also have books for all of those programs.

Paradox 4.5 for DOS uses *.db, *.px, *.val, *.r, *.f extensions (some with a number after them such as in *.R1 or *.F1).

I can change the data contents of your tables to have four digits for the year in the dates using Changeto queries. Usually you should change the data without changing the structure of the table because a table restructure will affect a lot of things and even make the application fail or give errors. If you undo the restructure the consequences will not reverse (all reports that contained that field will have it no more, the same for forms, etc.), You will have to fix the reports, forms, etc. So do not do a table restructure. Paradox 4.5 for DOS can handle dates up to 12/31/9999, it is just that it shows it as two digit years but internally it stores it as four digit years. There is a way to make it show the four digits. Also if you do Alt F5 and use the right and left arrow keys it will let you see all of the year digits.

I can be reached at:

Then I can provide you with my personal e-mail address
