I used the help funtion but this returns me a date not a number.

DATEDIF(start_date,end_date,unit)

I want to get a number not a date

If A1 is start date and B1 is end date, then in C1, format the column to number format and use =A1-B1.

Nope that is not it...I am trying to calculate the months between both start and end date and then multiply by 12 to get an age...

Help on Datedif is pretty much useless. Take a look at Chip Pearson's site for a much fuller explanation:-
