Date-Time formatting?

I may be an idiot for asking this, but how would a date variable be formatted using the Date-Time Formatting Strings? The page in the help file lists what values do what, but doesn't provide any information on how to use them. If this is a stupid question with a simple answer, then I apologize, but I would like to know what to do.
