Date Fields? in a table

General question. . .how are dates stored in the raw table field as "date" 8?
Does it store a Julian or a numeric or a string or characters or intergars or what? What is it actually saving , realizing "Dates" can be used in a 100 different ways.

THEY ARE STORED AS RAW DATA YYYYMMDD IN A DATE FIELD.
TESTING....
CREATE A TABLE WITH TEST AS DATE FIELD AND SAVE A TEST1.
INPUT DATA 22/12/2001 {BRITISH DATE FOR EXAMPLE)
THEN SAVE AND QUIT
GO TO THE PROMPT AND TYPE TEST.DBF. YOU CAN SEE THE DATE STORED IN YYYYMMDD FORMAT.

Datetime field, however, contains date in the new format (double number).
