DataMigrator Configuration 1

Has anyone implemented DataMigrator for Windows File Systems? We are now testing it and I'm looking for recommendations for the best configuration settings fo migrating files that have not been accessed in two years.

Hi

It's quite diffcult to specify best config settings for DM because it all depends on your environment and what you are wanting to achieve.

You need to start at the first rule (Percent of the volume to be kept free) and work your way down the list because each rule has to be met before any files are migrated to secondary storage.

So decide how much space you want to keep free on your disk then when a migration is run and the free disk space is lower that the value you specify then it will move onto the actual file rules (size, age etc) and if any files meet he specified values then Galaxy will keep moving matched files until the specified free disk space is reached.

Thanks, birky. Our main criteria is to migrate files that have not been accessed in two years. So we are trying to figure our how to set the rules for percent of volume and free space % so that we only migrate files that meet the age criteria. It seems that DataMigrator will ignore the age criteria to meet the free space criteria. How would you recommend that we configure solely on age?

What version 5.0? Make sure you have the "or" option checked and not the "and" option...

Yes, we have version 5.0.0 (BUILD 38) Service Pack 3. However there are no logical operators such as AND, OR, etc in the configuration??

Hi

Only way I can think of is to try setting the '% of volume to be kept free' to a very low value (eg. 10), the 'migrate if free volume is less than' to a high value (99) & file size to a very low value.

Then you would set your age field to 730 days..remember though that this refers to access time & not actual age of the file.

When a migration occurs, in theory, DM should look at your free space & see that you are over the amount you specified for your free space , then would look for files that haven't been accessed in 2 years & start migrating them to your secondary storage until the % of free space has been reached.

Hope this makes sense..best to test it on a test dir first though as this is all theory.

Thanks, Birky. We've tested that theory already and the problem is the last part of your statement, "until the % of free space has been reached." The migration will stop when that percentage is reached (which means not all files > 2 yrs will be migrated if set too low, or additional files < 2 yrs will be migrated if set too high). So it seems that there isn't any config for us to be able to ONLY migrate ALL files that are >2 yrs since last accessed date.....

It's very confusing isn't it...I think the idea of DM is just to ensure that your disk never fills up.

Have you put a call into your support guys?

Yes, we have. Commvault's tech support doesn't have a good grasp of DM either and they are almost trying to figure it out along with us.
