Database Tab, What is it good for....?

Within the Crystal Management Console, under Objects (reports) is a tab for Database. What value does the Logon Name and Password? From our testing it appears to not use this information but use the Log In As Id and Password for your PageServices.

When I put an Invalid UserName in Logon Name it doesn't fail to connect, which appears to support my theory that it does absolutely nothing.

We are using Crystal Enterprise 8 with a SQL Server 2000 database on 2 server (1 for database, 1 for web services) both servers running Windows 2000.

Since no one else has responded to this I guess I will.

I am not sure how you are calling your reports. If when you call the report you pass the database user and password then yes, the database tab will do nothing for you. If however, you are not passing this info then the database tab is where CE finds the defaults.

At least on my installation it works correctly that way, even for my reports that call multiple servers.

Lisa,
Have you tested it where you put in an invalid user name and password for that report and see that it actually stops working? I think you will find that the report still runs because of the user name and password that is stored on the Page Server services.

Yes, if the database tab user name and/or password are invalid, it prompts for them.

We us NT user name and passwords for CE and database specific user name and passwords for the database. If your using NT authentication for the database, it may be that it is using NT authentication and not authentication that CE sends. Do users accessing the database directly need to log in if they are a valid user?

We are using NT authentication to log into both CE and the database. Are you using native drivers to the database or a ODBC System DSN to your database?

I even tried to set the setting to prompt for a user name and password on that database tab for the report and it still runs the report without prompting. Is there a setting somewhere in CE that tells it to use that information?

In case this makes a difference, we are using ePortfolio to present the reports to users. Within ePortfolio I also set the secruity to secWindowsNT instead of secEnterprise to do the web single login.

The only way we got our reports to work and not loop on the log in is when we put an ID in the PageServer that has access to the database. Any changes or settings on that database tab of the report seem to make no difference.

Thanks for your help.

I think your problem is that the database is using CE's single sign on token to logon to the database. Try creating an NT user that has rights to CE but not rights to the database. That would at least help narrow down your problem.
