Is it possible (CR 8.5) to have the name of the database that is attached to a report print out on the report?

If you can create a SQL Expression, you can use the DATABASE function (under Functions>System), or use the appropriate method for your database type. For example, if I want the SQL Server database name I'm connected to, I would use DB_NAME() as my SQL Expression.

It is an MS Access 97 database. I tried adding an SQL expression, but System was not listed under the functions tree.

If you are using VB as a front end then set up a formula and place it on the report where you want to see it.

Then in VB you can pass the value of the Location property of the DatabaseTable object to the formula.

Why can't you just put a text object on the report and type the name of the database? It's not like the database name is going to change very often, is it?
