I run Excel 2003 and want to create a way to simplify making up a schedule of clients to be seen on a given day. The problem I encountered was that the datasheet has multiple lines in a raw and when I use data validation on input sheet, it comes out as a single line. Is there a way that the data selected to the validation in the Input sheet could look like the Datasheet? The following is an example:

Datasheet
-----------------+------------+------------+
Name | DOB | Facility |
-----------------+------------+------------+
John | | |
# 000030111 | | |
3 B 101 | 00/00/00 | PT |
-----------------+------------+------------+
Adam | | |
# 000030111 | | |
3 B 101 | 00/00/00 | BWDF |
-----------------+------------+------------+

Input sheet (desired view through data validation)
-----------------+------------+------------+
John | | |
# 000030111 | | |
3 B 101 | 00/00/00 | PT |
-----------------+------------+------------+
Adam | | |
# 000030111 | | |
3 B 101 | 00/00/00 | BWDF |
-----------------+------------+------------+

Hi,

This does not make any sense.

Data validation has a very specific meaning in Excel that is associated with validating individual cell entires.

Please rephrase your question.

Your example shows exactly the same data on input sheet as raw sheet - that may be what you want but unless you show / explain what your current situation is, we won't be able to realistically help - as per Skip - please xplain what you mean by Data Validation because from what you have posted so far, it has nothing to do with what Excel terms as data validation

Rgds, Geoff

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.

Please read FAQ222-2244 before you ask a question

I apologize the the lack of clarity in my question. I want the Input sheet look the same as the Datasheet, with the exception that the Datasheet has a long list of names. I am using data validation in the Input sheet to select specific names from the Datasheet. The results I am getting in the Input sheet are these "John&# 000030111&3 B 101" (The "&" symbol represents a character that is replacing a return in the datasheet) in a single line. I want the data in the validated cell (Input) to look the same (multiple lines with returns) as in the Datasheet.

I hope this clarifies the issue some. Thanks for your help.

Juan

Your OP was very confusing!

Your data is in ONE ROW with Line Feeds in the first cell...
[tt]
John
# 000030111
3 B 101 | 00/00//00 | PT |
[/tt]
OK. The DISPLAY in the dropdown will NOT be able to show the line feeds

However, if your format the CELL with the DV to WRAP, then it will WRAP.

My follow up question is, WHY would you have a column in your data, that contains MULTIPLE VALUES?
[tt]
John
# 000030111
3B 101
[/tt]
Why not separate fields for Name and whatever the other two values represent.

That an awful table design!

Thank you. The issue has been solved, in spite of my confusing presentation. You guys are great.
