I need to take 2 basic PC's and figure a way to make them capable of transmitting basic data between them from up to 20 miles away.

with no wires? quite a project. You will prolly need towers perhaps as high as 100 feet, and line of sight and dishes for antennas

you will want the Wireless Bridges up on the tower, so fiber up to the bridge may be a good idea.

How sure are you, that you can't just use wires? (ISP, t1, cable, Modems, etc.) one other thought are both ends in cell phone range? you could use cell phone modems if not much data needs to be moved

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I didn't describe my situation very well...I need to put a computer on a tug boat and have it talk to a computer at my office. It is within cell phone comm distance, but I'm not sure how to set it up. I have been tasked with finding a way to do this without involving my corporate IT folks, just to prove it can be done. I'm NOT a computer tech type. I think I can do it, just need some advise.

Thanks !!!

Just so happens that B&B Electronics catalog came today. Suggest that you go look there.
