CAN SOMEONE TELL MY HOW I CAN TRANSFER PROGRAM DATA FROM ONE COMPUTER TO ANOTHER COMPUTER. I HAVE A NEW COMPUTER AND WANT TO TRANSFER SOME PROGRAMS AND DOCUMENTS FROM THE OLD COMPUTER TO THE NEW COMPUTER USING A DIRECT HOOKUP BETWEEN THEM IF POSSIBLE.

THANKS, JM

HI,

1. If the volume of myDocuments is not high, then, ZIP them.. send as an email and download in the new computer and unzip it.

2. Beware, Programs may not work, if you simply copy. You may have to install in the new computer so that they work properly.

Hope this helps :) ramani :-9

Further to ramani's reply, if there is a large volume of data you have several options, probably the easiest is to remove the HDD from the old system, set its jumpers to Slave and hook it into the new system as primary or secondary slave. You can then just copy from one to the other using Windows Explorer. Other methods would be to use Windows native Direct Cable Connection software with a serial or parallel cable or go to a proper network with network cards and CAT5 cable. Both these options involve acquiring extra hardware however. As for copying programs, forget it except for the most basic which involve only a single .exe file and no registry entries.

Best way is to get a pair of NICs (you can pick these up cheaply) and a piece of Cat5 crossover cable, install NetBEUI, and set some share locations.

As Mulga says, avoid copying programs - always install them from the original disks.

You could purchase a null modem cable (serial) and that would stop you having to buy NICs. You can also get a copy of Laplink, which is free from magazines etc, and use it to transfer your data across.

I have the same problem with copying my mp3's and MS Offices (cd damaged) from 1 pc to another. These are the options I thout of trying: 1.) I thought of taking the HDD out of the old pc and slave it to the new pc.
2.) Zipping to a floppy
3.) Using ghost software (not sure how use this)
4.) CD burning

I have been wondering if you can get a Smart media reader/writer and use that to transfer files. These readers usually have a USB Plug. They use them for cameras to store pictures on. Basically this is just flash media. A Smart media can hold form 16 Meg to 256 Meg. I also saw an item called a Thumb Drive that works on the same principle. I doubt if you can just copy the programs from Office. MS likes to make things difficult.

If you had the download of a program like IE5 or something like that that might be nice to copy if you have all of the cab files. If both computers were exactly the same you might be able to just copy the entire drive. However this can cause a lot of problems.

If you still had the certificate with the License number on it for MS office software you might be able to get a new disk. Technically you pay the most money for the license not the disk. Call Microsoft if you really own the license and ask them about it. Microsoft is really bad about supporting their previous versions of Office.
