I work for a company that uses a lot of laptops, I have given countless lectures on the importance of backing data up to the file server but to no avail. I have had many instances where i have had to send hard drives out to data recovery sites for which i have been charged massive amounts of money. I would like to try and recover data myself in future, I am fine when it comes to corrupted OS files or deleted data but when the media is damaged i have no idea what to do. If anyone has any links to any good articles i would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Patrick

I can't really speak on the data recovery aspect, but I did work for a large company that had similar issues. What they ended up doing was issuing each laptop user (usually remote sales staff) a PC-card hard disk. Each laptop had a logoff script that copied the users' documents and critical files to the PC-card disk, then shut the system down. That way if one of the laptops had a bad HDD they still had the data and could quickly get them up and running on a new laptop. You could probably do the same now with large USB memory sticks.

Yeah not a bad idea!! Again it's getting these users to comply is another issue, It would be easy if everyone was on site all teh time but these people rarely are! If anyone has anymore ideas please feel free to help

Check Veritas's desktop and Laptop option. Were looking at installing at a couple of our sites.
