I'm working on a Toshiba Satellite laptop with a P3, that used to have WinXP Home. I need help on recovering the data from the hard drive. I dont know what happped (user will not tell me) to it, but i am guessing the drive was erased without being formatted. If you have any helpful advice please share the knowledge.

Hello

Provided that the hard drive can be mounted as a slave in another PC, I have had good results using the R-Studio data recovery software in these circumstances. The steps you need to take are as follows:

1. Install R-studio on local hard drive of desktop PC
2. Remove hard drive from Tosh laptop and mount as slave or on secondary IDE channel of desktop running NT4/2K/XP (so it can read NTFS format) and connect the drive to the power supply.
This is the hardest part of the process, as you will need adapters for the power and data cables.
3. Let R-studio scan the hard drive for partitions and save what it finds to the local drive, you can then burn off data to CD's or copy it up to a network etc.

Thanks for the tip. I am tryin Rstudio now, but connected to the laptop via cross over cable. It does not connect to it. I will give your way a try. (I wanted to avoid removing the drive)
