I was told about this product last week. It is some sort of fire stopping putty that is not supposed to be as messy as the regular fire stopping putty. Have any of you used this? Who makes it and where can I find some? Thanks for your replies.

Mikey

Putty is usually never messy, unless you meant caulking.

There is a big difference between caulk and putty for firestopping.
Caulk is pretty much permanent, while putty can be taken out for re-entry and then put back in.

Do you have a brand name?

I don't have a name for it Richard. The putty we use now is sticky and hard to get off your hands. The fire Marshall told me about this "Data Putty" and said it wasn't as messy.

Mikey

Richard we use both. The putty we use now is red and leaves a red die on you. The stuff I am checking into is gray.

Mikey

At least with red hands you'll know your techs firestopped something.

We have used the caulk (tubes) and trowel in stuff (5 gal bucket), both being red (Specfied Technologies) and sticky but we now use the puddy (from the same manufactuer) and it is gray and not as messy.

We generally use type FSP putty by Nelson. It is a bit oily in content, has a slight red color to it, but I don't recall having any problem getting dye on my hands when using it. I believe we shopped around it was somewhat less expensive than competitive brands.

Good Luck!

It is only my opinion, based on my experience and education...I am always willing to learn, educate me!

You know, with the description of "putty" and "gray", I'm thinking that your fire marshall is refering to duct seal, which is NOT firestopping material.

TT Tommy may have hit it on the head. I called tech support with the STI this morning and they dont make a grey anymore. I think I have gone as far with this one as I am going to. Thanks for your replies and efforts though and have a good rest of the week guy's.

We use plastic gloves when ever we are working with Firestop. We also work in a hospital were glovess are plentiful, but it's not very expense to pick up a box of 100. Probably less then $5, and think of all the soap you'll be saving !! [thumbsup2]

I use putty from Nelson as well. I have used different brands but the Nelson putty does not get as hard over time like some of the others. The Nelson putty also leaves no stains, just wash your hands with soap and water and you are done.
