Hi there Fellow Experts,

I have a situation in which i hope ya'll could help me with. Currently i have an box running on AIX 5.1. This is a lease machine. Recently we have purchased a new box which is preinstalled with AIX 5.2. I want to know copy whatever i have in the old box(5.1) into the new box. To trick is that i also want to ensure that the new box is running on AIX 5.1

What is the best way to do this ? I have a time constraint as i don't want to rebuild the environment again. Is there a solution where i could just backup the old machine with the existing OS and restore it in the new machine by overwriting the 5.2 OS with the 5.1 OS. If yes, could someone enlighten me as to how this could done(i.e sample syntax, etc). Are there any other workarounds to tackle this problem ?

Thanks in advance.

I've already done a mksysb to tape on the old machine. But i'm having trouble trying to restore it to the new machine.

Please do correct me, in order to restore this to the new machine, the new machine needs to be booted with 5.1 also. Is this true ? Is yes, how do create a bootable cd for 5.1 ? Alternatively, can i boot from tape itself ?

Yes,
Ths is the whole idea of a mksysb tape.It IS bootable.
Just select the tape as your boot device from SMS.
Once it will come up it - will give your an option to install the SW from this tape after selecting a destination system disk.

Long live king Moshiach !

0) do a mksysb of old box
1) boot new box with CD N°1 AIX 5.1
2) enter maintenance mode
3) install from mksysb old box
4) migrate new box to aix 5.x if you need
