I am attempting to write a program to download data from a data-logging device. I can successfully connect through Hyper-terminal every time, but the data displayed in the terminal looks like this:
þþþþMÇÃÃ
(~}
þþþþ
ÇÃÃ(}}

þþþ ÈÃÃF}}

Any ideas on what this is, why this is the case etc? What can I do to decode this?

It's as if you're not setting the correct terminal type (e.g. vt100, etc.).

I have it set to Auto detect the connection type. However, I think the unit might have pretty old software on it so I will have a go at changing it... James Goodman MCP

I have just tried every emulation type, but I didnt get anything which I would expect to get.

I am half expecting a router-type telnet connection to the device, with menu's & commands. Does this sound feasible?

I have very little knowledge in communicating with serial devices, let-alone retrieving their data :/ James Goodman MCP

You can get what looks like garbage output if you dont have the parameters such as baud, parity ect.. set up correctly. It is also possible that the vendor saves everything in a binary format and it is being transfered and displayed as ASCII.
