I have a customer on dial up internet through windows 98. When connected, the bytes sent climbs continuously, even when the connection is idle. He has current Norton Antivirus installed, running and up to date. Any ideas on what could cause this?
If your customer has NetBIOS installed, by default it will broadcast across ALL network interfaces. This includes his dial-up PPP connection. This will happen, regardless of whether there is any traffic specifically intended for the Internet or not.
I believe that you can go to Networking, and remove NetBIOS from the Bindings to the Dial-Up Networking interface. This is highly desirable, because your customer is probably sharing his entire hard drive out to the Internet right now.
