I have a Linksys (wired) router and I have a SMC wireless router. If there a way to change them together so I can use my inet connect (off my linksys) with my wireless laptop?

Heres a diagram

Intet --> LinkSys --> SMC --> Laptop

I had all my wired PCs in the SMC router for a bit but I found it was always dropping connections etc.. I just need it for the wireless feature.

Hi there ironmunk...

What you have to do is disable the dhcp server of the SMC router, set it to be in router mode (so basically just make it work as a wireless switch). You may also wanna change the lan ip address to 192.168.1.x (x=2-99, 150-254).

It will actually be easier if you have just gotten a regular Access Point instead of a wireless router..but anyways, good luck to your setup.

thanks for the help, but I still can't get it to work. Below is a diagram and the steps i've done.

WAN (ip: 24.x.x.x) --> Linksys Router (Gateway 192.168.1.x) --> SMC Router (Port 2 off Linksys to WAN on SMC)(Static IP: 192.168.1.200, Manually enter WAN DNS Settings, Gateway: 192.168.1.200, DHCP off) --> laptop (Static IP: 192.168.1.101, Gateway: 192.168.1.200)

anymore help?

what should my settings be on my wireless (SMC) router?

The SMC wireless router should be set to a static IP address in the subnet of the Linksys router; say 192.168.1.2 as its LAN side IP address, subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.1.1. There are no WAN setup considerations, as it will not be routing thru the WAN port. DHCP should be disabled.

Connect to the uplink port on the Linksys from a regular LAN port on the SMC. Your wireless clients will pull a DHCP address through the SMC from the Linksys router without issue.

bcastner is right...

you have to use a regular or an uplink port of the SMC router(depends on your cable).

SMC router: disable dhcp and set it to work as a router only and not as your gateway. No need to do anything for internet configuration since it's gonna work as a switch now
