We have a DLT backup that I have finally been able to get functioning correctly and speedily except for one slight problem. Any new tapes we use fail consistently. We can use older tapes that we have already used but every new tape we have purchased gives us either a Cyclical Redundancy Check error or Unrecognizable data error. I've been able to get a small backup using a new tape but when attempting to re-use one it has failed. It's almost as if once I get any error the tape is corrupted. Any advice?

I struggled with this once, and after trying new tapes, old tapes, and many other possibilities it ended being a bad tape drive. We replaced, and it has been working fine. Although we were unable to get ANY backup, unlike what you described, it might be worth checking.

I'm thinking it has to be a driver issue but it doesn't make sense that it works fine for the old tapes and not the new. Unfortunately there is no way to format the tapes either. Seems once they are ruined they are useless.

I agree with jcar.

We were experiencing problems with new tapes being "rejected" due to CRC errors and with older tapes backing up ok, but failing when verifying. It turned out to be a bad 4 month old DLT drive. I inquired as to what would cause a drive to become "bad" after only 4 months, but couldn't get any answers. Guess it's a huge industry secret or something. Anyway, I sent the "old" drive back and installed a new one, and am now getting good backups again. Now I'm counting down.....3 months - 4 days......3 months - 3 days....<while gripping my warranty tightly in my hand>
