Would somebody please advise as to how to configure a linux Pc so that a cursor picked text in the window can be pasted elsewhere. For example to vi edit a file listed by ls command. Thanks.

In KDE most highlighted text can be pasted by pressing the middle button.

Thanks Mellegem but I forgot to mention that I have a two button mouse. Would that require simulataneously pressing some key?

If you have [tt]Emulate3Buttons[/tt] on, pressing both mouse buttons simultaneously should produce the same result.

You can probably pick up a three-button mouse at your local wally-world for around $10 or so. If you plan on using linux for anything productive, it would be well worth the investment. I struggled with the Emulate3Buttons stuff for a while, and found it *really* frustrating...
