Customise Notification |cons?

Sounds likes the easiest way I can think of would be to use resource hacker to change it. And to be honest with you, I've only used it to change my "Start" bar to read "Schmitty"(my nick name). And to do that, I still had to tap into the registry, but that's a little different than changing the icon. Hope this gives you a nice start.
I'm sure you can dig some more stuff up on it. Try doing a Google search for "Changing tray icons with Resource Hacker" or something along that line. Someone will have a site to tell you exactly how to do it.
