ok i just built this pc for my friend and i am having trouble installing the operating system. Ihave tried many os's. First off i tried to install xp. I got the cd to boot and when it got to the area where it says "press f6 to install 3rd party scsi or raid drivers" at the bottom at about the 3rd thing at the bottom it says "loading kernal.dll debugger" and then it freezes. 2nd of all i tried installing win2000 pro and this time i got the cd to boot and then it installed all the temporary drivers and then at the end where it says "starting windows 2000 setup" it also freezes. 3rd os i tried is me (which i hate btw) i got it to format my hard drive and then it said at the end "copying windows setup temporary files..." and then it froze again.

it has a athlon xp 2200+
asus 333 with only built in audio
512mb of pc2100 ddr ram
geforce 4 ti 4600
Western Digital 80 gig, 7200 rpm, (special 8mb cache version)
^
thats what im wondering about, is there some jumper that i have to switch or a bios setting that i havent seen to change the cache?

If you got any ideas at all please tell me

I would run fdisk off a start up floppy disk, delete any existing partitions, then partition the drive. That should solve the problem.

I would start from scratch and find out if your hardware is set up properly..
If you run it too much and you have hardware incorrectly set you can damage the components.
"First things first"

Mainboard etc has dip switches and jumpers
Bios settings
etc

Kimber There is no such thing as a dumb question. Only a dumb mistake because you didn't ask...

Your symptoms are ringing a very painful bell of mempory problems. Mine were 95,95a, 95b, 95c, 98efe, 98lfe, and 98se but the failures at different points were what rang the bell. Ed Fair

That's just part of the hard drive and shouldn't be a problem, probably can't be changed.

HAve you partitioned the drive? It's deffinitely NOT fun if you have an 80Gb partition with windows and all your programs installed on the same partititon. Imagine if Windows has a fault and you have to run Scandisk on "thorough" setting- how LONG would that take? Imagine defragging 80Gb at a time. A complete windows crash and burn (can't boot or anything) and you've LOST all your precious information.

It's always a good idea to use a smaller partition for your operating System.5Gb it your case should do the trick.Just install the essentials on drive C and the rest on your other partitions.
MAke sure you set "Large disk compatibility" in Fdisk. But as said above,Fdisk ,repartition and fresh install. As long as your drive is configured properly and detected in bios it should work.

I don't think there is any setting you have to change for the 8 mb cache on the hard drive. I have the drive and it works fine. I think it's something else. Did you go to the western digital website and download the bootable disk for it? It has utilities on it that helps you set up the hard drive. The website is
Try that, I hope it works.

You have a memory problems for this computer I think.
To solve the problem is possible to boot from DOS (Win95, 98, ...) bootable diskette and perform the memory test. The "DOCMemory RAM Diagnosics" test can be used from Be sure your RAM is good. If problem persists, it is meaningful to think further.

Ed is right. I had the same problems when trying to install Win2K on my custom pc. Turns out on of my both sticks of my PC-2700 was bad. I was a little upset due to the fact that I paid nearly $400 for the 2 sticks of 512mb ea. I called up NewEgg.com though and they promptly replaced them and I can tell you what if you want good PC-2700 get the Corsair XMS with the CS2 Latency. My computers screams(*giggles*)!!!

Athlon XP 1900+
Corsair XMS PC2700 (2x512mb sticks.)
Soltek SL-75DRV5
ThermalRight AX-7 heatsink w/ 80CFM Delta Fan
LeadTek GeForce 4 ti4600 w/ TV out
SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum
Linksys NIC
SB Modem Blaster
WD 100gb 7200RPM HDD
WD 120gb 7200RPM HDD Special Edition w/ 8mb cache
Antec SX1040B w/ 400watt p/s
NEC FE950+ 19" Monitor
Kilpsch Promedia 5.1

(***Giggles***) because of the 80CFM delta fan *LOUD*, but cools the heck out of the CPU!!!
