Current situation:
A JAVA application uses a custom servelet to take users from its GUI to the appropriate Upfront page based on the user's security credentials. After that, user must select a report to run.

I need to know if it is possible to bypass that user class's main report page and to take user directly to a particular report (if there are no prompts) or to the prompt page of a particular report.

Basically, I want to be able to display output of an IWR report within another application with out forcing the user to click the newsitem link in Upfront.

If anyone has experience with this, please let me know. Right now, I'm thinking to simply use the URL of an IWR report and to somehow include UID and PW in the URL string.

Use the following syntax:

http://hostname/Cognos/cgi-bin/imrap.cgi?iu=imrap&cd=r&nid=

followed (without spaces) by the newsindexcode that can be found in the newsindex properties in the report advanced tab.

I've looked through the Upfront Dev Guide and do not see any reference to passing the user's Upfront login credentials!
I was expecting to find it in chapter 4, but it's not there.

Dmitry,

You are right on this. In a simmilar case as you have descibed I wasn't facing this problem because the users all have os sign ons (as set in access manager), so the passing of login and password is al under water and not bothering the user. This might work for you. If thats not an option i would say you can't do it with a url, you have to build a xml script as described in chapter 3 of the dev guide.

Good news!
I just got a reply from cognos support technitian who actually knows what he's doing!
Here's his solution that I tried and it works:

To get in straight to a report one has to call the report newsitem, run the report .... bookmark it and get the link that takes you to the login page and modify it there for usage. For example I run the sample iwr customer order report and when the report runs, the url shown is:

http://wottsooj2k1/cognos/cgi-bin/i.../GetPage>&id=21e7dd36d33b11d79b08d20af076a11b

Take this url and paste into a new browser, I get a login page with the following url:

http://wottsooj2k1/cognos/cgi-bin/l...54534F4F4A324B31-8020--2F636F676E6F73-386-2--

I modify the middle return upto the return_url= to embed the userid and password and the resulting url to use is :

http://wottsooj2k1/cognos/cgi-bin/l...54534F4F4A324B31-8020--2F636F676E6F73-386-2--

Hope this explain how to get a url of a iwr report to embed the userid and password. The process is pretty similar with other type of newsitem with the final modification made to embed the userid and password.
