I have an older Aptiva running 98 Second Ed. 4.10 and sometime in the spring I lost the ability to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to either get the list of tasks or to reboot. I was busy so I ignored it, but its time to fix it. I have checked all the keys on the keyboard (various combinations). Otherwise everything shuts down normally. It seemed that this happened about the time I de-installed Norton System Works (it made the system crash too often).

I have tried using the system configuration utility to not load various startup programs to see if some program in particular is causing it, but so far that hasn't been productive. At first I suspected the Starband satellite software, but not loading it doesn't enable a reboot. My other prime suspect is the Seti@home client software.

Can I bring the task list up with any other "run" command?

Hey Moonhare

this is the first time I heard of something like that why why don't to re-install Norton System works on your system and see if that was the problem.

Dear at51178,
Thanks for the suggestion! I am a bit hesitant to reinstall Norton because it means deinstalling my current virus software and then having to reset everything afterwards, but, you are right, it might be my best shot. I was really hoping that someone could tell me the exe file name that would just make the task manager pop up anyway.

Would it be informative to make it boot up in DOS and see if it works outside of windows, or is a dos-boot going to just be a dos boot under a windows layer?

Yrs,
MoonHare

that may not be a bad idea about rebooting in dos or what about trying another keyboard that might work as well or may update the drivers for the keyboard.

well i know in windows 2000 the command for task manager was taskmgr

but you might want to do a seacrh in windows for taskmanager or taskmgr to make sure.

i have never heard of this

at51178 is probably on the right track. Try a different keyboard. Glen A. Johnson

AT51178 and Glen,
you all are good! I tried going to dos to no avail, but the other keyboard did the trick.

Thanks to all for your help,
MoonHare
