CS1000E MGCs in different subnets? WILL IT WORK?

Ok.. I have searched this forum as well as Nortel NTPs and can't find a clear answer for my question..

We are upgraded a Opt. 11C running Succession 4.50 to the CPPM Call Server and MGC platform (CS1000E) with Succession 5.50j. Currently we have 2 Fiber remotes in a different building off of this PBX. When the upgrade is done the fiber will go away and they will be MGC based cabinets communication with the Call Server in a seperate building..

When I put my request in to the customer's IT guys for the needed IP addresses and connections to accomidate the new equipment (CS and MGCs) they informed me that they COULD NOT give me the needed connections and IPs for the remote cabinets that would be in the same ELAN and TLAN subnets as the Call Server, Signaling Server and the 4 other MGCs. From what I have read in the NTPs along with my limited knowledge of IP fundamentals, it appears this will NOT work or at least it is not a supported data/voice convergence?

Has anyone had this work? Is it supported? IF yes, how? IF no, why?

maybe I'm wrong, but seems like it could be Vlan accomplished..

Campus network system requirements
The following campus network system requirements are necessary:
• The ELAN subnet and the TLAN subnet must be separate.
• ELAN subnet applications must be on the same subnet. This includes
the Voice Gateway Media Cards, which must be on the same ELAN
subnet.
• Voice Gateway Media Cards in the same node must be on the same
TLAN subnet.
• Use of the VLAN concept is a practical way to maintain the same subnet
for remote locations.

as long as it's the same elan and you install your mgc' with the correct default gateways, it sould work, i have a customer that allows his sales staff to move ip phones from state to state... leave atlanta, plug your ip into the company network in new york, check your mail, rec and make local atlanta area calls same is true for dallas, chicago and LA.. the only advantage he uses from his voip network is the portabilaty.. of course checking your voice mail from a laptop while in route is a plus.. desktop msgs, not softsets

he could allow vpn and soft phones on the laptops but has a security issue with vpn..

As long as they can see each other (ping) via layer 3 switch i think it will work even if they are on different subnet, same priciple as campus redudancy

I've read the NTPs that states as bigindian65 posted and then I talk to others, like you guys who say it can be done.. I guess the NTPs are carrying over the caution with broadcast storms across the network issues into the new releases. I think its going to come down to telling the customer, "It can be done, but its not a Nortel "supported" deployment..." Anyways, I have a few more resources I've tapped into, one being Nortel and another being Global Knowledge so I'm going to wait and see what the general conscensus is before I push forward with this project.

Any additional info on top of this is appreciated!

Broadcast you can control, VLAN out will be the important things. I actually have Tlans & Elans that can ping each other, but do not/ can not broadcast to each other, or just do not have broadcast ports, however my Data Engineer has it setup is acceptable to Nortel and ETAS, so it is no big deal in that respect.

I currently have an MGC that is on a different subnet and different building than the rest of the CS1000e. It is in the same v-lan, and all elements can communicate, and it works normally.
 
It is possible, but they need to explain to me why they need to be on the same subnet. The only reason to have systems in the same subnet is if they rely on a broadcast mechanism to transfer data and if that's the case, we need to be looking at a new system."

This is an email I got from the customer regarding this issue.. Unfortunately this is where my IP knowledge fails me.. Does the system rely on a broadcast mechanism to transfer data?

No, the system does not rely on broadcast messaging. Each element is assigned a unique IP address in various IP spaces.

Nortel names the following IP spaces:

E-LAN (Embedded or Equipment LAN) - used for communication between call server and VoIP elements. Must be a separate subnet from other customer LAN traffic. Elements must be able to route to each other.

T-LAN (Telephony LAN) - used to carry voice packets between IP sets and VoIP elements - should be separate from E-LAN.

C-LAN (Customer LAN) - the customer LAN. used for management interface on CallPilot, and for Desktop Messaging between Desktop Clients and CallPilot Server.
