CrystalAPS hi CPU util

Hi,
we are very new to Crystal enterprise (up and running just over a year with incrementally increasing divisions coming on-line with new reports), and may simply be running into a scalability issue.
We have increasingly longer periods of time where the CrystalAPS server (on Crystal Enterprise 9.0) runs at 100%. We also eventually see Crystal_WebCompServer timeouts in the event log.

In anyone's opinion, is this most likely an issue with reports being improperly written, a scalability issue, and is there some "simple" tuning parameter in one of the Crystal servers that might help?? Is there any way to determine exactly which reports are being run at a given time, or other recommended monitoring suggestions??

Any thoughts (including good stock tips) appreciated.

What database are you using for APS?
The APS does not actually process any reports, so the report design will not impact APS.

I think I need to come out to USVI to help solve this one

we are using the MDSE Sql DB. Are there tuning parms there that might help??

I read a faq that recommending increasing a timeout value in order to eliminate the event messages we are getting, but I can't believe that is a good first step. Must be something else causing the symptoms.

MSDE = MicroSoft Desktop Edition

MSDE is not designed for heavy usage (for lots of reasons) I would consider upgrading the database.

There maybe some additional tuning that can be done, but this would be the prime suspect IMO.

So to answer your original question: I would think it is a scalability issue, and you should consider a complete system audit.

Argh!!

Is there any good reason to use synchronous connections to the db?? I am wondering IF this is a SQL db problem if changing the connection to Async (if I can find the tunable again) might help some.

I would guess synchronous would be faster (by definition). But the way MSDE handles threads...who knows.
