crystal reports XI windows 7

when I edit a cr report file .rpt - to make changes to the layout or add a field or some such thing - and then close it answering 'yes' to saving the changes - the file isn't released from cr. if I try to open it again in crystal reports, I get a message, 'This report could not be opened for writing. any changes must be saved to a new file.'

if I exit cr, the report file is deemed as being still 'open' in cr. if I try to delete the file from the folder using windows explorer, I get the message, 'This action (delete) can't be completed because the file is open in Crystal Reports. Close the file and try again.' but cr is closed and the .rpt file isn't open in cr. for some reason, 'it' thinks that the file is still open in cr and I can't do anything with it. trying to open the file, 'it' thinks that the file is already open in cr so I can't save the source .rpt file, I have to save it to a new name ending up with several versions of the same thing. it releases only if I restart my system.

is there a 'file registry' containing file name entries that are turned on when a file is opened in a program but not being turned off when the file or program is closed? where do I find it and how do I change it?

thanks
kim

I think this has happened to me when someone has emailed a report to me (saved with data) without first saving it.

thank you lbass

this is a report that I created and stored in a folder in my directory on our server. I've edited the report before and saved it with a new name and edited it again and saved it with no problem.

is there a registry entry for such things that may have been changed or something?

thanks
kim

p.s. i was out of the office on friday so my response was not due to lack of interest.

I have had this happen to me a few times ... Couple reasons for it..

Once it happened because I was disconnect from VPN improperly and the server never released the file handle appropriately.

Another time I left my desktop open overnight and the server did a scheduled reboot resulting in the same issue...

In both cases going to file manager on hosting computer (where the file is located) and "disconnect" the file.. Most programs can recover from that but CR seems to have issues with it.

please excuse my inexperience but I don't know what VPN is or if we use it here - if it's some that is optional to run.

I leave my desktop on overnight all the time, I just put it to sleep but I don't recall it undergoing a scheduled reboot. when the problem occurs, if I shutdown and restart my system, the file(s) are released and I can open them again without the 'This report could not be opened for writing. any changes must be saved to a new file.' message, but only once, after that if I try to reload it, I get the message and if I try to delete it, I get the 'this action can't be completed ...' it happens immediately after I restart.

currently I have only Windows Explorer but I can't find any tool on it to "disconnect" the file. I tried downloading a couple of the free file managers as suggested by TRdojo but they said that the software wasn't trusted. I did download one but couldn't seem to get it to run.

is there some sort of file registry to look at to check the status of a file and disconnect it from there?

I've been around for a while but really a desktop operations neophyte.

thx

I'll give it a try - but tomorrow, it's well past closing time here EST
