I am working with a report which uses customer number as the group sort. I want to sort by zip code. How do I change this?

Create another group outside the customer id group on zip code. You don't have to show the header or footer, its just there to "sort first on"

I am inserting another group with zip in descending order and where do I "Sort first on"

if it is group one it is the first sort. in the gray area that shows the break out you can grab the group and drag it to be group 1. Since it is group one, it will be sorted firt. Again, you don't need to display the header or footer, just have it be the first group.

It looks like the sort was not the customer # but the customer amount owed in the TOp N/Sort Group Expert the group is being sorted by a formula which calculated amount owed. What is the significance of the group sort if this overrides it?
