Crystal and ACT!

Crystal runs reasonably quickly when you run a report on just the activity table. If you need to link activities to a contact though, you need to add the activities and contact tables. The report then slows to a crawl and takes ages to run. Is this normal or acceptable? Is there something I can do to speed up the process??
