Cross Platform (OS X to Vista) printing

I have the following setup:

1. Windows Vista (Home Premium) with a Canon ip4300 printer connected to it, and shared.
2. LPD Windows printer services turned on
3. OS X configured to print using LPD services, and printer is located as lpd://pc_ip_address/ip4300_printer.
4. Now, the Mac will print WITHOUT A PROBLEM to the printer which is what I was initially having problems with.

Now, how do I get the Mac to select the correct printer? The closest choice is BJC4300 printer (or something like that). How do I "install" the ip4300 so that it is available in "other printers" selection in printer preferences?

Any help would be appreciated.

You may need to download the Mac printer driver for this model of printer.

I just went to the Canon website and typed in ip4300

Thanks for your response. However, I already have the printer driver for this printer. My problem is that when the driver and printer setup utility is "installed", it is expecting the printer to be directly connected to the mac, and thus will not install because it does not find the printer connected.

Any other suggestions?

You have to set up printer sharing if connected directly to the PC

Otherwise

Connect to it via TCP/IP, then you should be able to find it

No help there - already have printer sharing set up on the PC ... enabling LPD printer services on the Vista machine allows my Mac to "see" the printer connected to the Vista machine, however I have no way of "installing" the exact printer model I have.

I tried connecting the printer directly to the Mac to get the drivers installed, but once disconnected and back on the PC, same problem. The printer I have isn't listed.

No,

You need to download the "Mac" version of the printer driver.
It should then install itself, if it doesn't then move the files to

Harddrive>Library>Printers>PPDs>Contents>Resources>en.lproj

You don't need the printer attached to install drivers

Then, in you System Preferences>Print & Fax

Click on the Plus + to add a printer then you should see a Printer browser window.

If your printer doesn't show up there then click on more printers.

Then you match the printer with the printer drivers you installed earlier...

I hate to be a pest but I'm having a heck of a hard time getting this to work ... I appreciate the detailed information in your previous post but I guess I'm a little confused.

I d'loaded the printer drivers (I have the Canon ip4300 printer) and it put a ".dmg" disk image file on my desktop. I opened this and installed the ".pkg" file. However, I can't figure out 1. where it put the installation files and 2. I still don't see the ip4300 in the list when I go to add printers. I don't think I'm looking in the right place.

Hello again everyone ...

I have some fantastic news ... I GOT IT TO WORK ! ! !

First, a little background:

I was searching the net (as I usually do) for solutions or discussions that I might have missed. Then, I came across a program I remembered from my Mac OS 9.x days ... D.A.V.E. by Thursby Software (

http://www.thursby.com).

I went to the website and started reading about the new version of the software. After a few minutes, I gave up trying to decipher if it was the solution to my problems and decided to give their tech support department a call.

Needless to say, when I explained my problem, the first thing the tech said was "No, DAVE will not solve your problem! But here's a solution to try!"

He directed me to the Gutenburg print project for Mac OS X. Well, I reviewed the supported printers and my Canon was listed. I downloaded the disk image file (.DMG), and installed the program. Here's the link:

Then, went to configure the printer on the Mac and, amazing, there was my printer. Installed, and running like a charm.

Here are the caviats though when installing:

1. you must enable LPD printer services on Windows Vista

2. you must share the printer, and the printer name must not contain any strange characters (including spaces and dashes).

3. when you specify the lpd:// address for the printer, use the IP address of the host computer, NOT the name of the computer. Use 192.168.x.x instead of Dell-kitchen, then the name of the printer in step 2.

That should do it. If anyone needs more clarification, feel free to email me.

I want to acknowledge and send out kudos to the folks a Thursby software for their help ... even though I did not need their product and won't be purchasing it, they went the extra step to help me out.
