I am running FileMaker Pro 5.5 on my workstation and I am trying to open files on a Mac running FileMaker Server 5.0. I can connect to the server and see the files listed but I cannot open any of these files. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, let's see...
- does ANYTHING happen when you try to open the file?
- is the file set up for multiple user access?
- is your file restricted to a specific access method (i.e., TCP/IP) and are you accessing it via that method?

The files are on a apple running FileMaker Server 5.0. They are setup so mutiple users may open them and tcpip is how they are connecting. I created a host using the ip address and I can connect to the host and I see the file in a list but when I try to open a file my workstation tries to open the file but times out after a few minutes.

How are you making the connection to the host?

You should be using the Hosts button in the Filemaker Open File window. Otherwise it might time out or give a file share error. Im Steven B

Also, is this the only computer trying to make a connection? Or can others connect and this one cannot?

I have created a host connection by using the server's ip address after using the host button. I do see the files that are on the server but cannot open them. i don't get any error messages. If I ctrl/alt/del to check the processes it shows me that FileMaker is not responding. Other pc's are able to open these files but they are all Macs and I am the only one that is a Windows pc trying to access them.

Thanks Donzy

Make sure your files on the server have an .fp5 extension. We had the same problem and it was that PC platform did not recognize the application extension.

save your files as "FileName.fp5" not just "FileName"
