How would I go about cross connecting a computer modem to an internal ata. Or is it recomended to hire a tech. to come out to the office and do this. I am wanting to hook in a computer or answering machine because the voice mail is just to expensive right now.
I am not sure I understand what you are looking for .
To hook up an ATA all you need to do is run a cross connect from a station port to the ATA and then out the ATA to either a phone/fax/modem (any analog device) or you can cross connect it to a cable feed to somewhere else in the building where the device is you need hooked up. Let me explain a little more. We are a very small company and we need to have some kind of answering service but no money is in the budget. I know very little about the phone system but since I do the computers it became my responsibility. I have been reading and searching for the different options and hooking up one of the computers will give us the most for the least. I do not have an external analog adaptor and the norstar-plus compact ics 2 installer guide says that there is one installed. How do I go about hooking up a line to it and if posible in simple terms while I am getting a better grasp of the setup and components.
DO you have software to process calls on a PC . If not I would sugest a answering machine (for your cost reasons)
But it is farly simple .
DO you have and external ATA ?
If so just cross connect like this :
from the station side of your KSU(key system) > to the ATA (input) > either your cable feeder blocks to go to another office where the answering machine is or directly from the output on the ATA with a modular cord .
SO set up your Phone system :
F**266344
password (default is 266344)
terminals and sets>Capabilities>forward No answer>Ext # of the ATA >rings(amount of rings before it goes to VM)>next forward on busy(be careful with this I don't know the size of your office but just remember ALL calls going to VM will be going through On Port so It will only process one call at a time)>Ext # of the ATA
Pretty clear cut But I don't sugest you try any of this unless you are completly comfortable with it.
Your best bet Might be to see if you can get a tech in qualified to work on Nortel. You can cause alot of damage to a phone system if you don't know what you are doing.
$'s wise you would be looking at an hour maybe two and as long as you got the ATA it should be just labor.
Might be worth looking into. If you find a tip helpful Please take a moment to mark it as such.
